What is this about?
Mullet on Main is a unique historic revitalization project that transforms a 125+-year-old building in downtown Fayette, Iowa, into a distinctive mixed-use property with commercial and residential space. This project combines historic preservation, entrepreneurship, and community investment, while breathing new life into a part of Fayette’s historic Main Street. The Mullet is privately owned and not affiliated with Upper Iowa University, although we pay homage to them through our mulleted peacock mascot.
The backstory:
In May 2026, we purchased the former Shiners location at 206 S. Main Street in Fayette, Iowa, to preserve its charm while modernizing it internally for personal & professional use. This building will feature supremely boring office space in the front and residential space in the back (business in the front + residence in the back = MULLET).
Preserving the historic character of the Mullet on Main is our top priority. We’re committed to honoring what’s already here while giving the building a new chapter. I’m a proud UIU alum, and my husband and I chose to restore this property to stay connected to the town, the people, and the university. The Mullet gives us a place to work and stay as needed, and we can bring our dog too. He's a good doggo.

Common Questions
Is it a bar / coffee shop / restaurant?
No, although that sounds like a good idea! I am afraid I would eat/drink all the profits, plus we already have our hands full with our current business.
Will it be available for rent or used as an entertainment venue?
No, the Mullet is privately owned, and we are the only entertainment. Believe me, that's not worth paying to see. We have ideas for fun Mullet events, but we need to finish the renovation first.
Is this business affiliated with UIU?
No, the Mullet is completely independent of Upper Iowa University and any affiliates.
Why Fayette?
As an alum and also potentially the world's slowest college student ever, I return to Fayette a few times a year. I thought it would be cool to restore this building while having a permanent place to stay.
